Ever since I got lip filler, I've been obsessed with trying new lip products. With all the new real estate I have acquired, there's plenty of space. As some may know having lip filler means my lips feel dry all the time, making the search for the perfect matte lip difficult and time-consuming. That is, until I stumbled across the Maybelline New York Color Sensational Ultimatte Slim Lipstick.
We all know Maybelline New York as one of the leaders in the drugstore beauty scene so when they launch basically anything, I'm always excited to try it. Keep in mind the Maybelline New York Color Sensational Ultimatte Slim Lipstick isn't a new product. It actually launched in 2021, the year in which it earned an Allure Best of Beauty award — I'm just a tad late to the party this time. I was searching through my ever-growing stash of lipsticks and randomly pulled the Ultimatte Lipstick to wear for the day, not thinking I would love it as much as I did, but boy, was I wrong.
This product comes in slim bullet-shaped packaging and the formula basically feels like a stick of butter (in the best way possible). The pigment just glides onto my lips, leaving them with a matte, but never dry finish. It's as moisturizing as a balm but as matte as a liquid lipstick.
So, how do they do it? According to cosmetic chemist Ginger King, the formula uses a combination of dimetheicone, a silicone polymer, dis-diglyceryl polyacylafipate-2, a lanolin alternative, and jojoba oil to moisturize lips, giving that "butter" like effect. "For the mattifying ingredients, the formula features a grouping of kaolin, silva, and nylon-12, all of which absorb excess oil and provide that no-shine look," she says.
This lipstick is lightweight, and truly feels like nothing is on my lips, which is pretty hard to find in a matte product. The transfer is also minimal — after wearing it on the subway with a mask on top, I was surprised to see little to no transfer. The tip of the product is also shaped to contour your cupid's bow, so you don't even need to use a lip liner with this.

Not to mention, the Ultimatte Slim Lipstick is available in 20 shades, ten of which are in the Neo Neutral collection, a beautiful array of nudes that work across all skin tones. My personal favorite is the hue More Sepia (pictured on me above), a lighter brown with orange undertones that's ideal for my olive skin.

Personally, I give this product a 10 on a scale of one to 10 and it quite honestly may be one of my favorite lip products, dare I say, ever?
